Not exactly a horror flick, but I know you love John Carpenter and his gritty 1981 post apocalyptic action classic, Escape from New York, starring badass Kurt Russell with Harry Dean Stanton, Adrienne Barbeau, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasence, and Isaac Hayes. And Tom Atkins. You always have to mention Atkins or he’ll come to your home, stare at you in utter disgust, and inseminate your girlfriend with the same stare. MGM/20th Century Fox have announced the film for a Blu-ray/DVD combo set for August 3rd for $24.99. No technical details yet, but expect a 1080p 2.35:1 widescreen transfer, 5.1 lossless DTS-HD Master Audio, and hopefully all the supplemental material of MGM’s previous 2-DVD Special Edition. Expect this one for much less, as I’ve seen MGM/Fox’s dual-formats combos in-store for as little as nine bucks.
This one is also very welcome considering Escape from New York was released on a region free Blu-ray in the United Kingdom by Optimum Releasing in 2008. Unfortunately, while the resolution was 1080p, the source was Optimum’s standard definition DVD poorly upscaled to high definition. I personally jumped the gun on this British disc before any reviews and got burned. So it will be nice to finally, and hopefully, see Snake break bad on lawless gangs and The Duke in real HD!
